Give Yourself an Annual Review - The Muse

Give Yourself an Annual Review - The MuseGive Yourself an Annual ReviewWeve all suffered through annual reviews.Filling out endless amounts of paperwork. Checking the box on goals. Pretending that you have a plan for the next year. And then- hoping for a good raise or promotion.Company reviews can be helpful (at least you get time to talk to your manager about your career, right?), but often times we rush through them so we can check the annual review complete box and move on.But theres one review that really matters to your career. Its your own personal end-of-year review ofYourselfHear me out When was the last time you sat down and looked at how you did last year in terms of your career goals? Im not talking about what you told your supervisor- that honestly may not be true- but instead what you really dreamed of for you. When was the last time you wrote down your big career dreams and developed a plan to go after them? When was the last time you thought about how you spent your time and how you could improve? If you had an answer to these questions, excellent Youre ahead of the game.If you didnt? Well, welcome to the club. The vast majority of us are waving hello.Over at The Revolutionary Club this month, were talking about how to get started on your review. The good news It doesnt matter if you know exactly what you want to do in the next year (or five), or if you are completely stuck and have no idea. Either way, a personal annual review can really help you make progress and get a much needed boost. Seriously. To get started, schedule some time on your calendar. This is important stuff, and it deserves at least 45 minutes of focused time in a place that you feel comfortable. Then, grab a pen and paper or your computer and a leer Word document, and get ready to do some thinking and writing. Oh, and a glass of wine can also significantly help this process.Look BackwardBegin by asking yourself- and jotting down the answers to- a few questions about the past year What did you do this year- in both life and work- that you are really proud of?Where did you spend the majority of your time at work? On tasks or projects, in meetings or brainstorming sessions? At your desk combing through Excel spreadsheets? Were you happy with what you were doing? What was the best investment of your time that you made? What was the worst investment of your time? What do you want to do less of at work? What are the top two things you learned that you dont want to forget? If you could change one thing about what you did last year work-wise, what would it be? Look ForwardThe next step is to look ahead and map out where you are going to go next. Dont worry if you arent sure- this exercise is meant to guide you.Think through, then jot down your answers to, the followingWhat do you want to learn in the coming year?Based on what you learned by looking backward, what tasks, projects, or other work do you want to spend more time on in the coming year?Based on what you learned by looking backward, how will you let go of the tasks that you want to do less of? Where is it time for you to grow? What skills do you need to sharpen to do that? How will you grow those skills? What kind of help do you need to move forward in your career? Where will you get that help? What is your mantra moving forward for when you get stuck? What is one work (or personal) goal you will absolutely accomplish this year?Whats your first step? Whats Next?Theres a reason why businesses spend a lot of time doing quarterly and year-end reviews. They can be illuminating, and they give you insight and context as to what would be helpful to do next. They are also comforting- its good to remember what you did and take an objective look at how it turned out, including the good, the bad, and the ugly. Taking the time to do this exercise will give you both focus and momentum Focus because you know what works and what doesnt, and momentum because you have a direction and clear actions to take to move forward. What the Yankees injury-depleted roster would look like in the office

What the Yankees injury-depleted roster would look like in the officeWhat the Yankees injury-depleted roster would look like in the officeThe New York Yankees are somehow 14-11, sitting a surprising second in the American League East all without almost all of their star power like Giancarlo Stanton, Miguel Andujar, Gary Sanchez, Aaron Hicks and most recently Aaron Judge, along with eight others on the injured list.Despite those injuries, the Yankees have played some of their best baseball, winning eight of their last ten games with a lineup that tests organizational depth.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreEver want to know how the Yankees less-than-ideal lineup would look like in an office situation? Heres a rundown from the Yankees lineup in the 7-6 extra innings win against the Kansas City Royals on Sunday.1. DJ Lemahieu, 2B - Mr. ReliableLemahieu is one of the lone proven play ers in the Yankees injury plague. He won the batting crown with the Colorado Rockies in 2016 and signed a friendly two-year, $24 million deal in the offseason to land in the Bronx. The Yankees felt the two-time All-Star welches undervalued and certainly appears to be one of the teams best offensive - and defensive - options so far.2. Luke Voit, DH - Overachiever He was an unsung hero last year when the Yankees acquired him from the Cardinals (.333 batting average and 14 home runs in 39 games) and hes looking again like that so far in 2019. Voit, 28, extended his on-base streak to 34 games on Tuesday night.3. Brett Gardner, CF - LeaderGardner has been around forever, through the goods (2009 World Series) and the bad. While his name annually pops up in trade discussions, the 35-year-old continues to find consistent playing time despite a crowded Yankees outfield.Said Yankees starter CC Sabathia I think the way he always plays hard on the field is a good example for guys to follow, and that naturally makes him a leader.4. Clint Frazier, RF - FrustratedOne of baseballs former top prospects has been blocked in the Yankees crowded outfield ever since he was acquired from the Indians in the Andrew Miller trade back in 2017. After battling concussion-like symptoms for much last season, Frazier has starred since replacing Giancarlo Stanton earlier this month, batting .324 with six home runs and 17 RBI.5. Mike Tauchman, LF - Full-time freelancerAcquired in the offseason as a depth option, Tauchman became the Yankees next-man-up and finally hit his first home run in the majors after spending parts of three seasons trying to do so.6. Gio Urshela, 3B - Part-time freelancerThe 27-year-old has floated around for a while, but his strong glove isnt enough of a reason to keep him in an everyday lineup. Consider him the freelancer here for the assignment, but not needed once Miguel Andujar returns from injury.7. Mike Ford, 1B - WorkaholicFord played at Princeton in the I vy League, went undrafted and finally made his MLB debut this year after spending his entire career in the minors since 2013. Not bad for someone who went from little expectations to start in pinstripes.8. Austin Romine, C Old reliableHes one of the longest-tenured Yankees and some feel hes one of the best backup catchers in baseball.9. Tyler Wade, SS - DisgruntledWade has long waited for an actual opportunity with the Yankees for a few seasons but lost his opening day spot when the Yankees traded with the Rockies to get Tauchman. When Wade found out he was starting the year in the minors, he voiced his displeasure with the decision saying he felt blindsided by the move after doing everything that was asked.I did everything I could possibly do to show them I belong in the big leagues to help this team and I just know Im able to play outfield. Ive done this for three years now. If thats the issues, I dont know what the problem is, Wade said in March. You might also enjoyNew neurosci ence reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

U.S. Military Thermite M14 Grenades

U.S. Military Thermite M14 GrenadesU.S. Military Thermite M14 GrenadesMost people have not heard of Thermite grenades, nor do they know that these grenades do not explode but they melt. Not all grenades explode. In fact, the list below are the fruchtwein common types of grenades and their uses within the military and law enforcement. Though there are many different types of grenades, the one similar feature is that when you pull the pin on a handheld grenade, you have about 4-5 seconds before it explodes or is ignited into chemical reactions or smoke. Commonly Pictured Grenade When people think of grenades, they often picture the handheld explosive devices where, after pulling the pin, they are thrown at the enemy position and they explode on target. There are many types of grenades, grenade launchers, and rocket-propelled grenades that demonstrate the effectiveness of these small explosions for the military as well as law enforcement. Fragmentation Grenades The type of grenade most people are familiar with is the fragmentation grenades.A wide variety of hand grenades are used today by the U.S. military. pfote grenades are loosely defined as any anti-personnel device that explodes on release. The M67 Fragmentation Hand Grenadeis the current fragmentation or frag grenade used by American and Canadian soldiers. Below is a list of many of the common types of grenades used by the military, police and special operations teams for a variety of missions. Tear Gas Is a Very Common Grenade Anothervery common grenade seen by the public is the tear gas grenade. These chemical grenades are used mainly by police in riot control situations or to end situations where criminals are surrounded and bunkered within a facility. The chemical 2-chlorobenzalmalononitrile is the major component of tear gas also known as CS gas. It mainly causes visual and breathing irritation causing the eyes to tear and the nasal passages to run uncontrollably. Stun Grenades Is Another Common Grenade Stun grenades are mainly used by SWAT and Special Operations teams when entering a facility where the known armed enemy is located. There may be a hostage situation where a stun grenade is used to create a loud disorienting explosion with little to no fragmentation occurring. These can be used to create a diversion or upon entry into a dangerous hostage situation. Also known as Flash Bangs or Concussion Grenades. Smoke Grenades Smoke bombs are another common type of grenade most people have either seen personally or have noticed on television during war or riot footage. The use of smoke grenades is typically used for signaling to another unit your present location or the enemy location for targeting.Smoke grenades can also be used to conceal a group of military members from the enemy force nearby as they find better concealment or retreat. Thermite Grenades Because of their heat and volatility, thermite grenades are almost never used as an offensive or defensive weapon against people. The weapon is used almost exclusively for destroying enemy materials in a secure and controlled environment. Thermite grenades (designated the M14)are one ofthe most destructive weapons used by the U.S. military.Thermite is a powerful incendiary device used to produce intense heat through a chemical reaction and destroys anything it touches. Thermite is known as a pyrotechnic composition that burns intensely when ignited. When detonated, thermite grenades produce molten iron from a violent reaction of the weapons thermite filler. Some thermite grenades have been known to burn at temperatures of nearly 4,000 degrees Fahrenheit. Thermite grenades are capable of burning through an engine block in seconds. Therefore the extreme heat makes thermite grenades is great for destroying enemy weapons/gear caches, bunkers, and vehicles. These are the type of targets that are ideal for use of the thermite grenade. The chemical makeup of Thermite is an aluminum powder (met al powder) and metal oxide (also known as rust). Used Underwater Thermite grenades use iron oxide as an oxidizing agent and they are able to function underwater and can be used by soldiers when theirgear is submerged in lakes, rivers, and oceans. The U.S. military provides detailed instructions and training to soldiers on the careful handling and use of thermite grenades to avoid injury or harm to themselves or unit.

How to create chemistry with your interviewer

How to create chemistry with your interviewer How To Connect With Your InterviewerPosted April 22, 2013, by Josie Chun You carefully iron your best outfit, clean your nails and brush your hair so youre looking immaculate, give yourself plenty of time so youre not late, and front up with equal parts nervousness and excitement. You throw your shoulders back and put on your best smile youre there to impress. First date? No, youre heading into a job interview. When meeting someone for that all-important first meeting, the way they appear on paper (or on their LinkedIn profile) doesnt always match up with what youre met with in real life. Its not just a matter of ticking all the boxes as with any relationship, it really comes down to nebulous qualities such as chemistry, rapport and connection. Surveys have shown that the majority of interviewers base their final decision on chemistry with the candidate. In fact, a study featured in the American Sociological Review suggests that empl oyers are mora likely to hire someone that they have more in common with, rather than the most skilled candidate. Directly applicable skills are still the most important criteria, but fit with the organisation/culture comes a close second and has a huge influence on final decision-making, especially when it comes down to you and another equally skilled candidate. So make sure you do everything you can to make the best impression possible and generate some of that magical chemistry. It could be what gets you the job 1. Make eye contact One of the most important ways to establish rapport is to make eye contact with the person youre speaking to. Not too much, of course, as staring too hard and too long will probably freak them out, but making eye contact will help you connect and demonstrate that youre a straightforward, honest and confident person. 2. Smile Smiling and being warm, open and friendly will go a long way towards creating chemistry but dont overdo it Just try to relax a nd show your natural warmth. 3. Use their name Everyone likes to be addressed personally, so make an effort to remember your interviewers name, and make sure you get the pronunciation right 4. Be a good listener Being a good listener is one of the best ways to establish rapport. Listen carefully to what your interviewer says and repeat or confirm points if appropriate. When its your turn to speak, be confident and dont be afraid to ask questions. Asking relevant, mit niveau questions based on what youve been told will show the interviewer that youre both thoughtful and attentive. 5. Use open body language Your body language can have a huge impact on how you are perceived during an interview. Sitting with an open and relaxed upright posture (no crossed arms) will facilitate rapport, and subtly mirroring the interviewers body language, facial expression, rhythm and tone will unconsciously increase the feeling of connection. 6. Be authentic While you can learn specific techniques to he lp develop chemistry with your interviewer, anything that feels contrived or fake, or that smacks of insincerity, will only hurt your cause. Ultimately, you have to be yourself, and theres no point getting a job based on false pretences. Sure, practise your job spiel and prepare your answers to possible interview questions, but be sincere, really think about what youre being asked, and answer as thoughtfully and honestly as you can. How to Tell When a Job or Client Is a Bad Fit

How to Tell When a Job or Client Is a Bad FitHow to Tell When a Job or Client Is a Bad FitYoure looking for work or eager to land new freelance clients. When youre in search mode like this, it may be tempting to adopt the philosophy that beggars cant be choosers. However, even when landing a new position or gig is your primary goal, certain opportunities are best rejected. The fact is that your fit with a position or person should be an important consideration as you evaluate fhigkeit professional roles and relationships. What exactly is fit, and why is it so important in job selection? The concept of fit simply means how close the match is between your skill set and preferences, and what the employer or client wants and needs. When pondering fit to determine whether or not you should join a company or accept a new client, you should also take into account the culture and expectations of the organization, as well as the work style and personality of any babo, team, or client you could end up working with.Determining fit is more art than science, but there are still some key indicators that can suggest its a smart move to look elsewhere. To assist you in this effort, below are some red flags to watch for that can alert job seekers to the possibility that a job opportunity or prospective client may be a bad fitYour styles are at odds.As much as you may think of yourself a team player who gets along with everyone, most people connect better with some types of companies, teams, and individuals than others. By taking the time to notice this upfront rather than turning a blind eye to the reality, you can save yourself aggravation down the road.A style disconnect might be about how you prefer to get your work done- for example, you want an organization or boss to give you some flexibility in where and when you work, yet you discover during the interview process that your would-be supervisors style reflects a butts in seats mentality. You might also notice an irreconcilabl e style difference during your interview when you walk through the company offices and see that everyone is wearing headphones at their desk and not interacting, when you like to be more collegial and chatty while you work. Whatever the distinction is that puts you off, you should listen to your inner alarm bells rather than signing up for a disastrous fit.You sense a communication disconnect.Part of work style involves communication. If youre a freelancer who works remotely with clients, how someone communicates with you via phone or email might be the only indicator you have of fit. Pay attention during unterstellung initial discussions- does the conversation flow easily? Do you feel like youre both on the same page? Do you like the way that the person talks to you? Or do you feel nervous and on edge, more like youre being grilled than considered for a potential partnership? Trust your gut on this one. If youre speaking with someone who could end up as your supervisor, or as a cus tomer who youll work closely with to reach collective goals, then you want to make sure that youre going to be able to collaborate smoothly and intuitively. You feel like a square peg in a round hole.Sometimes its hard to pinpoint whether the fit feels wrong based on style or communication. In these cases, it could be the company culture thats to blame for a poor fit. Maybe thinking on your feet isnt your strong suit, yet your interviewer seems determined to ask you questions that catch you off guard rather than playing to your strengths. Or perhaps the issue is that after talking to the hiring committee, you recognize that everyone youve spoken with seems to have different goals and values than you. If something just seems off- whether during the search process or even how an organization represents itself in a job ad- look before you leap.By learning to recognize what jobs or clients arent right for you, youll be better prepared and able to find situations that are a great fit for your work style, skill set, and preferences.

4 Resume Mistakes That Push Recruiters Away

4 Resume Mistakes That Push Recruiters Away4 Resume Mistakes That Push Recruiters AwayWhen youre job searching but elend getting responses even though you know you could do the jobs perfectly well questions start to spring to mind. Doubt starts to settle in.Heres what a candidate sent to my inbox Ive hit a wall and now Im frustrated. I spent a lot of time on my resume, and I definitely make sure it has the keywords relevant to the jobs Im interested in. However, I get no responses, and I dont understand it. What else can I do to get people to respond to me somehow, someway? So, lets talk about 4 resume mistakes that push recruiters away. Hopefully youre not falling victim to any of these. If you are, the good news is youre getting actionable strategies you can take immediately to rectify these issues.Your resume timeline has gaps and holes that you could drive a truck throughLet me tell you something about resume gaps its perfectly natural to be concerned about them. Its also perfec tly natural to want to hide them. That being the case, though, the hugest mistake I see candidates making is emblazoning the dates in bold font down the right or left margins of the resume. Why on earth would you call such attention to something you wish you didnt have to explain? The right way to present dates with gaps is this list your employer and the city theyre in on 1 line, in bold. On the next line, list your job title, in bold, followed by the dates not in bold, followed on the same line by the scope of responsibility. The dates dont disappear. But theyre not visually emphasized and slapping the recruiter in the face in the 1st crucial 6 seconds. You got the brilliant idea to have a functional resumeI need you to not do that. Just dont.Across the board, most recruiters do not appreciate a functional resume. (Translation they will delete it post haste). There are a few reasons why overall, they feel like if youre going with a functional format, the reason is youre trying to hi de something. A functional resume makes it hard to find your dates, employers, and job titles.Butnewsflash those are the EXACT pieces of information recruiters are looking for. If they cant find them, theyre irritated.A functional resume is for a VERY specific scenario. For example, youre an IT professional with 20 years of experience, who also happens to have a serious, life-long love of fine art. You know so much about the origins and history of all kinds of pieces. So, 1 day, you decide to change careers and pursue roles as a museum curator. THATs when a functional resume comes into play.Someone told you to list consulting on your resume for the time you were actually unemployedHeres the problem with consulting most candidates consulting looks as fake as Photoshop on top of a Snapchat filter.Heres consulting gone wrong Independent IT Consultant (2016 to Present) Providing IT consulting and software development services to select clients, specializing in project management, softw are architecture, and IT operational issues. If youve been doing your so-called consulting since 2016, then it would stand to reason that you did some actual projects in all that time.
